RABBI NACHMAN DAVID LANDINSKI (1902-1968), FIRST ROSH YESHIVA OF GATESHEAD – RARE COLLECTION OF EIGHT INTERESTING LETTERS TO RABBI TZVI HIRSH FERBER (1879-1966), INCLUDING DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SPIRITUAL AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT OF THE GATESHEAD YESHIVA – 1945-1948 .

Some interesting excerpts from this correspondence:
‘I have just returned home from a journey on behalf of the Yeshiva ... On behalf of the Yeshiva I express many thanks to your honour for the interest shown in the Yeshiva’s situation, which is really very, very difficult ...’

‘I saw my special and generous friend Mr David Pearlman from Sunderland yesterday and when I praised the books written by your honour to him, he asked that when I write, I should ask that all the volumes [of your book] should please be sent to him...’

‘It is now a few days since I returned home from a journey on behalf of the Yeshiva. Many thanks to your honour for your interest in the Yeshiva and its situation. Thank G-d there are now close to 90 young men who are exceptional and diligent in their studies, and we hope that soon we will reach 100 – may the numbers grow!’

‘I was happy to hear that your sefer on Sefer Devarim is about to be published. Each volume is a great treasure, and nothing comparable is to be found among the later Torah commentaries ...’

‘Regarding your comments about the bachur ......; we are not to blame. We suffered much from him and showed great patience, despite him going against our spirit and the spirit of the Yeshiva. Despite this we forgave him every time, as he was exceptionally talented, but when he was found walking with non-Jewish girls, he realised that he has no place in the Yeshiva, and chose to move to another Yeshiva. He chose to go to the Glasgow Yeshiva and there he went totally astray ...
‘In fact, we have been following the advice of your honour for many years, and the Yeshiva has given financial support and advice to those who wish to learn a craft or a trade’

‘I returned today from my trip to Glasgow and found the letter from your honour, and I am sending receipts to the donors ...’

Rabbi Nachman David Landinski, son of Rabbi Moshe Landinski, Rosh Yeshiva of the Chafetz Chaim’s Yeshiva in Radin, studied under his father and under Rabbi Naftali Tropp and the Chafetz Chaim, as well as under Rabbi Zundel of Eishishok and at the Yeshivos of Kelm, Mir, Lomzha, Novardok and under Rabbi Ahron Bakst in Suvalk. Still in his youth he headed Yeshivos in Mlawa and Zhishkowa in Poland, and on the warm recommendation of the Chafetz Chaim to Reb David Dryan of Gateshead, he was invited to become the town’s first Rosh Yeshiva, in 1929. Rabbi Landinski also served temporarily as Rabbi of Gateshead from 1935 to 1938, and rescued many youths from Nazi-occupied Europe by accepting them as students at the Yeshiva, whatever their standard of learning at the time.

Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh Ferber was born in Lithuania and studied under Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno, Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer and Rabbi Naftali Amsterdam. He was a leading rabbinical scholar and leader in London, heading an independent community in the West End and leading the Hisachdus Harabanim in England. First Rosh Yeshiva of Manchester Yeshiva and later heading the Etz Chayim Yeshiva in London. Talented speaker and author of 14 rabbinic works, including Kerem Hatzvi.
