RABBI YITZCHAK SHMELKES (1828-1905), RABBI OF PRZEMYSL AND LVOV, AUTHOR OF BEIS YITZCHAK – MANUSCRIPT RESPONSUM, INCLUDING A FEW LINES THAT ARE UNPUBLISHED .

Responsum on the laws relating to a firstborn animal, addressed by Rabbi Shmelkes to his disciple, Rabbi Yosef Horowitz of Zarshin and Sanok. The responsum is published in Beis Yitschak (Yoreh Deah, Vol. 2, 128), but several lines of blessings and good wishes at the opening and closing of the responsum are unpublished. Written by a scribe, with the final lines and signature in Rabbi Shmelkes’s own hand.

Rabbi Yitzchak Shmelkes, recognised from a young age for his amazing Torah knowledge and great diligence. Disciple of Rabbi Yosef Shaul Nathanson of Lvov. Rabbi of Zhuravna (1857), Brzezany, Przemysl (1870) and Lvov (1894). Leading halachic authority and teacher to a large number of future Galician rabbis and scholars. Author of Beis Yitzchak – six volumes, Siach Yitzchak and other works.
