RABBI YOSEF ZUNDEL SALANT (1786-1866) OF JERUSALEM – LETTER TO SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE, ALSO SIGNED BY RABBI SHMUEL SALANT (1816-1909), RABBI OF JERUSALEM .

Letter from Rabbi Yosef Zundel Salant to Sir Moses Montefiore confirming receipt of his generous donation for the poor of the Ashkenazi community of Jerusalem. The letter mentions a donation received from Reb Zundel’s disciple, the famous Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, founder of the Mussar movement, then residing in Koenigsberg, and is also signed by his son-in-law Rabbi Shmuel Salant.

Rabbi Yosef Zundel Salant, disciple of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin and of Rabbi Akiva Eger. An outstanding saintly rabbinic scholar. Settled in Jerusalem in 1837, becoming unofficial Rabbi of the Ashkenazi community.

Rabbi Shmuel Salant, disciple of his father Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh, Rabbi Tzemach of Keidan, Rabbi Tzvi Broida of Salant and of the Volozhin Yeshiva. Known in his youth as ‘the iluy [genius] of Keidan’. Rabbi Shmuel was a son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant and travelled to Jerusalem after him in 1840. Head of the Ashkenazi Beis Din of Jerusalem, and founder of Kollel Vilna. He undertook two long fundraising trips to Europe (in 1848-51 and in 1860). Succeeded his father-in-law as Rabbi of the Ashkenazi community of Jerusalem.
