Pen and brown ink and wash with white heightening on cream laid paper mounted on card stock. 250x425 mm; 10x16 3/4 inches.
Ex-collection John Miller Gray (1850-1894), Edinburgh, curator at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, with correspondence to him regarding this and another drawing from curators at the British Museum, London.
Based on one of Raphael's seven large cartoons painted in a glue distemper medium on many sheets of paper glued together from 1515-16 showing scenes from the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles as designs for tapestries. Thee cartoons belong to the British Royal Collection but since 1865 have been on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
With a typed letter signed by J. A. Gere, Assistant Keeper, the British Museum, London, April 24, 1957, indicating that the "Drawing repeats the cartoon for this tapestry which is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, rather than the tapestry itself. It is thus of some interest and may possibly be a product of Raphel's workshop."
The tapestries were commissioned from Raphael by Pope Leo X (1513-21) in 1515. They were intended to hang in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, built by one of Leo's predecessors Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84), and while they were not permanently installed on the walls, they are still (on special occasions) hung below Michelangelo's famous ceiling.
