RARE LARGE TINTED PHOTOGRAPH TSAR NICHOLAS II, CIRCA 1896. Comprising a large and impressive oval vintage color tinted photograph of Tsar Nicholas II, circa 1896 mounted in its original doeskin textured mat and later wood glazed frame. The photograph 12 inches x 9.75 inches (30.5 x 24.5 cm). Overall including frame 22.25 x 18.5 inches (56.5 x 47 cm).

Provenance:
Acquired by the consignor directly from Mr. George Gibbes on October 19, 1989, in Oxford England. Accompanied with hand-written receipt signed by Gibbes as well as a photograph of Gibbes attached to verso holding the offered lot and a photo of artist "A. Gartashov-Verutuvski" ? inscribed to Mr. Gibbes and dated Harbin China 1923.

George Gibbes (1906-1993) was the adoptive son of Charles Sydney Gibbes (1876-1963). Charles Gibbes who from 1908 to 1917 served as the English tutor to the children of Emperor Nicholas II. (see lot 461).
