RAY MAN: (1890-1976)
RAY MAN: (1890-1976) American visual artist, a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements and a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer. T.L.S., Man, one page, 4to, Paris, 16th December 1961, to Alice [Bellony Rewald]. Man Ray thanks his correspondent for their letter and translation, commenting ´I like it very much - you have preserved the simple style I have written this chapter, of a young man in unfamiliar surroundings trying to find his way´ and further remarking ´I expect to finish my book in a couple of months. Of course, the translation will have to be finally approved by a French editor, after the English edition appears, so there is plenty of time. I shall keep you in mind as my translator´. The artist continues his letter in a social vein, ´We do not hear any explosions - there were more in our old neighbourhood (St. Germain-de-Pres). We do not mind the doves cooing below and the tenants have cleaned up the garden - looks like a little park. The Brauners are still away. It is very quiet! We love it here and are so used to the place it will be difficult to get adjusted to the studio again in the rue Ferou. I have been in correspondence with a man from Princeton named Belz - I suppose it´s the same one......Marie is keeping the flat in perfect shape. We do not give any parties´. VG
Alice Bellony Rewald (1925- ) French translator, art historian, and author, widely recognised for her critical translations of art texts. Bellony Rewald was selected by Man Ray to handle the French translation of his famous autobiography, Self-Portrait (1963).
