RAYMOND YARD: A DIAMOND SINGLE-STONE RING The brilliant-cut diamond set within a four-claw setting and between tapered baguette-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, signed Yard, ring size G

Accompanied by a report from 'The Precious Stone Laboratory' in London, stating that the natural diamond weighing 3.92cts, is F colour, VS1 clarity. Report no. 966889, dated October 3rd 2000.

Raymond C. Yard is one of the defining names of twentieth-century American jewellery.

His career began far from the glamorous world with which his name would become associated. Born in New Jersey in 1885, as a son of a railroad conductor, he left school at thirteen and joined Marcus & Co. in Manhattan in 1898 as a door attendant and errand boy. Over the next twenty-four years, he learnt the trade from the ground up, absorbing the practicalities of production, developing a formidable knowledge of gemstones, and becoming one of the firm's most sought-after salesmen.

Among the clients who came to trust his judgement was John D. Rockefeller Jr., who encouraged Yard to strike out on his own. When Raymond C. Yard Inc. opened at 527 Fifth Avenue in 1922, Rockefeller recommended him to friends and family; in its first year the new firm reportedly served more than a thousand clients, and within four years had already outgrown its premises.

Yard's reputation spread largely by personal recommendation, attracting families including the Vanderbilts, du Ponts, Harrimans, and Woolworths. A discerning judge of gemstones, he was known to wait for the right stone rather than compromise.

His playful side appeared in the late 1920s with rabbit brooches dressed as golfers, anglers, and cocktail-carrying waiters. In 1932 came jewelled house brooches, sometimes even modelled on clients' own homes.
