R.B. Hayes ALS as Pres. re: James Garfield, 9 Months Before His Assassination
ALS

A brief autograph letter signed by then-President Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893) in which he references President Elect Garfield. 1p on Executive Mansion letterhead, 4.5" x 7", Washington, D.C., December 7, 1880. Signed at conclusion as "R.B. Hayes" during his last months in office, and addressed to one Colonel Clark. Contemporary docketing in the upper left verso reading, "Hayes R. B./ Washington D.C./ Dec. 7, 1880." Exhibits light toning and soiling throughout, with small separation at the bottom of intersecting left fold. Faint mounting traces along the lower margin of verso. Otherwise, very good.

In full:

"I regret that we couldn't accept your kind invitation. Gen. Garfield will not be East again for some 2 weeks."

Incumbent President Hayes did not seek re-election, keeping a promise he made during the 1876 campaign. The Republican Party eventually chose fellow Ohioan James Garfield as their nominee, who would run against Democrat Winfield Scott Hancock. Despite capturing less than 10,000 more popular votes than Hancock, Garfield was easily elected with 214 of 369 electoral votes. Approximately four months into his term, Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau- a deluded office seeker- and succumbed to his injuries in mid-September 1881.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
