Amidst varied communal interests, R. Reines was much involved in education work. The plan he presented in his Sepher Chotem Tachnit called for a more modern method of Talmud study. His yeshiva in Lida named Torah Vodaath was the institution after which the the yeshiva in Brooklyn was named.
A leader of of Chovevei Zion, Menachem Ussishkin (1863-1941) was one of the founders of BILU, the Jewish movement in Moscow that encouraged immigration and agricultural development of Eretz Israel.
