REMBRANDT PEALE (Bucks County. United States, 1778- Philadelphia, 1860).
"Male Portrait in Neoclassical Fashion, ca. 1815.
Oil on canvas.
Attached is a report by Ximo Company (CAEM Art Centre, University of Lleida).
It has slight repainting and restorations.
It has a French frame from the end of the 18th century, with slight faults and adapted.
Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 83.5 x 68 cm (frame).
The angle from which the personage is portrayed, the slight degradation of the background where a play of tonalities can be appreciated, the brushstroke, the brightness of the whites and the clothing, invite us to think that it is a work belonging to the American school. The painting is closely related to Rembrandt Peale's portrait of his brother Rubens, now in the collection of the National Gallery.
The son of the painter Charles Wilson Peale, Rembrandt Peale grew up in an artistic environment, watching his father portray the great figures of the day such as George Washington and Benjamin Lincon. At the age of eight he began to work in his father's studio, together with his brothers Rubens and Raphaelle, thus giving rise to one of the most important dynasties of painters in the United States. Rembrandt Peale was part of a context of intellectual and economic development in a Philadelphia liberated from the British, where the leading intellectuals of the day gathered and innovative projects were established, such as the art museum founded by his father and which Rembrandt himself later moved to the city of Baltimore. Rembrandt studied with the master Joshua Reynolds, alternating his education with trips to the great European art centres of France and England. It was the artist Benjamin West who encouraged him to follow the path of portraiture, studying the work of painters such as John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart, followers of West. His style was defined by a naturalistic aesthetic with a classical heritage that led to the renewal of the style in the United States. Today his works are to be found in important private and public collections, such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, the National Gallery in Washington and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among others.
