[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. London Chronicle. Vol. XL, No. 312. London, England: J. Wilkie, 21 December 1776. Coverage of the Battles of New York and British occupation of the city.

8pp., folio, 8 1/4 x 11 1/2 in. Disbound (light chipping, occasional spotting). Provenance: Library of Stephen Foreman (blindstamp on newspaper, lower right on p. 593, and ink stamp in lower margin p. 599).

A Revolutionary War-period newspaper containing front page and inside page news coverage of the Battles for New York (Battles of Long Island, White Plains, and Brooklyn) and the occupation of New York City by the British forces.

The New York and New Jersey campaign in 1776 and the winter months of 1777 was comprised of a series of battles for control of the Port of New York and the state of New Jersey, fought between British forces under General Sir William Howe and the Continental Army under General George Washington. Howe was successful in driving Washington out of New York, but overextended his reach into New Jersey, and ended the active campaign season in January 1777 with only a few outposts near the city. The British held New York Harbor for the rest of the war, using it as a base for expeditions against other targets.
