LOT NOTERichard Mayhew has verbally confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
Richard Mayhew was born in 1924 in Amityville, New York. Known for his organic forms and vivid expressive colors, Mathews landscapes are sensual representations of his connection to nature and land informed by his African American and Indigenous American ancestry. Mayhew himself calls his works mindscapes. ?My mindscapes are also about the healing of the long trauma that Black and native communities have experienced collectively." Mayhew studied at the?Art Students League of New York,?Brooklyn Museum Art School?in 1948 to 1959, he also took some courses at?Columbia University. He was a Jazz singer in the 1950s, performing in small clubs in New York City. ?In 1955 he had his first solo exhibition in Brooklyn. In 1958 he received Whitney fellowship. He was also a member of the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition and the founding member of the legendary artist group Spiral.

Mayhew's works are featured in various permanent collections including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), ?De Young (museum), Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the?Smithsonian Institution and many others. Mayhew recently had a solo show at ACA Galleries?in New York (2020).
Condition Report: CONDITIONThe painting is in good condition, a small spot of paint loss lower right and along lower edge. Relined. UV light inspection showed around 10% of restoration, mainly along the perimeter and a larger area along the lower edge around 14 x 12 cm (5 1/2 x 4 3/8 in.)N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
