As an advocate of the Anti-Slavery Society, Richardson traveled alone with the modest sponsorship of a London newspaper on a fact-finding expedition to penetrate south of the Sahara to Timbuktu and the Niger. His objective was "to open a regular and secure way over the Sahara from the Mediterranean to the Niger" to suppress the slave trade.
