ROBERT COLESCOTT (1925 - 2009)
Le Déjeuner sur L'Herbe, I (After Manet).
Watercolor and graphite on paper, 1979. 559x762 mm; 22x30 inches. Signed, dated, and titled "After Manet" in pencil, lower right.
Provenance: acquired from Semaphore Gallery, New York; private collection, Massachusetts (1983).
Le Déjeuner sur L'Herbe, I (After Manet) is one Colescott's studies for his painting, Sunday Afternoon with Joaquin Murrieta, 1979. This study is more aligned with the original masterpiece from Manet than his 1979 painting that features a portrait of quasi-fictional nineteenth century bandido, Joaquin Murrieta.
A similar study of The Luncheon by Colescott is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
