Canvas. Dated and signed '70 / R. Raveel'.
A purified composition, according to Raveel's own observation in the familiar surroundings of Machelen aan de-Leie. We recognise the typical concrete wall posts with slabs by a few lines. The heavyness of the material is contrasted by a glossy white lacquer paint. The matt dark green and dark blue insinuates the presence of Flander's' beloved lawn and 'walking' needs no further interpretation in the presence of the white footprint. Raveel paints a bush or a tree with barely mixed, thick brushstrokes of white, dark green and blue on a yellow background. This spontaneous and expressive motif contrasts with the linear composition. This combination of colours, applied with a thick brush, can be found in Raveel's painted oeuvre from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. So too in a painting from 1971 'A ship sails past' in the collection of the Roger Raveel Museum. It is his way of capturing the liveliness of nature within the geometric framework of Flemish gardens.
With a certificate of the Foundation Léon De Smet v.z.w. and from the artist dated 10.07.2011.

Een uitgepuurde compositie, naar eigen waarneming in Raveel’s vertrouwde omgeving van Machelen-aan de-Leie. We herkennen de typerende betonnen muurpalen met platen aan de hand van enkele lijnen. Het zware van het materiaal contrasteert met een glanzende witte lakverf. Het matte donkergroen en donkerblauw insinueert de aanwezigheid van de door Vlamingen zo geliefde gazon en ‘het stappen’ hoeft verder geen duiding in aanwezigheid van de witte voetafdruk. Een struik of een boom schildert Raveel met nauwelijks gemengde, dikke verftoetsen van wit, donkergroen en blauw op een gele ondergrond. Dit spontane en expressieve motief contrasteert met de lineaire compositie. Deze kleurencombinatie, aangezet met een dikke kwast, treffen we in Raveel’s geschilderde oeuvre aan van vanaf de late jaren 60 tot diep in de jaren 80. Zo ook in een schilderij uit 1971 ‘Een schip vaart voorbij’ in de collectie van het Roger Raveel museum. Het is zijn manier om het levendige van de natuur te capteren binnen de geometrische kaders van de Vlaamse tuinen.
Met echtheidscertificaat van Stichting Léon De Smet v.z.w. en van de kunstenaar gedateerd 10.07.2011.

Condition: In our opinion this painting is overall in excellent condition. - In the outer upper part, the ground layer is visible right above the green-yellow-white thick brushstrokes. This shows up under UV-light, but does not appear to be an overpainting. - In the upper right part some minor brown speckles. (7 speckles, smaller than 0.5 mm, most likely to remove). - At the right part of the foot, some black swipe (smaller than 1 cm). This seems to be part of the artwork, an accidental stain of black paint, applied by the artist. (Photos with UV-light are available on request by email: info@bernaerts.be)
