ROLEX. A STAINLESS STEEL MANUAL WIND CHRONOGRAPH BRACELET WATCH
Model: Cosmograph
Reference: 6239
Date: c. 1967
Movement: 17-jewel manual wind
Dial: Black
Case: Tonneau form, screw down case back, No. 1597135
Strap/Bracelet: Stainless steel Oyster link
Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel folding clasp, signed
Signed: Case, dial, and movement
Size: 36mm
Accompaniments: None
The Reference 6239 was the first generation of manual winding Cosmograph, powered by the 72B Valijoux movement (then renamed 722). Unlike the earlier chronograph models that Rolex had been developing since 1930s, this Reference 6239 was designed with a focus on modernity and automobile racing. It was also the first chronograph with the tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel and the sub dials printed in different color to make it less cluttered and easier to read.

The current watch is a well preserved and original example of this manual wind era of Cosmograph watches, and it's companion in the sale, an exotic dial Paul Newman reference 6262/6239 (lot 12), provides another outstanding example of the manual wind references.
