Early water resistant watches were fully encapsulated in an outer case. This example of a Pre-Oyster Rolex case has a screw down glazed front with the case and winding crown inside. Effective though it is, you had to open the case to wind it every day. However it gave the watch the unusual perfectly round look with no winder protruding to spoil the silhouette.
