ROMAN GOLD INTAGLIO RING WITH JULIAN II THE APOSTATE

[ translate ]

Ca.300 AD. A gold finger ring comprising a flat-section hoop with applied granule to each shoulder stepped bezel with inset garnet, intaglio profile of an Emperor; possibly Julian II the Apostate (if we compare with coins iconography). Julian II was a Roman Emperor from 361 to 363, as well as a notable philosopher and author in Greek. His rejection of Christianity, and his promotion of Neoplatonic Hellenism in its place, caused him to be remembered as Julian the Apostate by the Christian church. Good Condition, wearable; D:22mm/L:30mm; UK Z; US12; 8.8g; Provenance: Property of a professional Ancient art and jewelry collector; from a private Dutch collection, previously acquired on the European art Market n the 1980s.
