ROOT, ELIHU
Archive of approximately thirty-seven signed letters to Judge Alphonse T. Clearwater. Washington & New York: November 1910-February 1933. Approximately 36 typed letters and 1 autograph letter signed "Elihu Root", each addressed to Judge Clearwater in Kingston, on various stationery including that of the U.S. Senate, the firm of Root, Clark, Buckner & Howland, the New York Constitutional Convention of 1915, etc. Largest 10 1/2 x 8 inches (27 x 20 cm). Usual folds, well preserved overall.

A substantial correspondence between Judge Clearwater and New York statesman Elihu Root who writes in a peculiar and entertaining style, for example: "I had abjured dinners, but, overwhelmed by the weight of your artillery, I slowly and painfully climb down out of my tree and submit myself to your disposition of the 15th of January. With mingled gratitude and resentment..." The letters are increasingly amusing as Root ages and in the last letter, dated from February 1933, possibly references outgoing New York Governor, President Elect Franklin Roosevelt: "One of the things which reconciles me to having reached a mature age is the knowledge that there is a perennial youth in the ancient capital of the State who still has the patriotism to exercise his remaining senses for the good of the country."
