ROSENTHAL “Standing White Poodle with a Green Collar,” 20th century. Designed by Theodor Kärner. Rosenthal Porcelain Factory, Selb, “Classic Rose Collection” brand (Rosenthal Group), after 1974. Porcelain, glazed, white body; subtle polychrome underglaze painting (collar in green, details on muzzle and eyes). On the underside of the body, an underglaze green stamp mark reading “CLASSIC ROSE / COLLECTION / ROSENTHAL GROUP / GERMANY / hand-painted.” Blind-stamped model number “1211.” Finely incised artist’s signature “PROF. T. KÄRNER.”
Dimensions: Height approx. 18 cm, length approx. 21 cm. A three-dimensional, lifelike depiction of a standing white poodle in an alert and dynamic pose, modeled with Theodor Kärner’s characteristic, masterful observation of animals. The dog is presented with a classic grooming style, with the dense, curly fur on the head, chest, and legs rendered in a striking, tactile relief, creating a charming contrast to the smoothly shorn parts of the body. A fine color accent is provided by a green collar hand-painted under the glaze with gold and silver buckle details, as well as the vivid rendering of the eyes and the slightly open muzzle.
Model number 1211 attests to the enduring popularity of this Kärner design, presented here in a high-quality later version from the renowned “Classic Rose” line. A wonderful and elegant collector’s item representing the sophisticated porcelain sculpture of the 20th century. In impeccable, excellent original condition with no chips, hairline cracks, or restorations. The delicate details of the hand-painting are brilliantly preserved.
