ROUX (Joseph). Collection of the Principal Maps, Ports, and Harbors of the Mediterranean Sea. Excerpts from my Map in Twelve Sheets. Dedicated to His Excellency the Duke of Choiseul, Minister of War and the Navy, engraved by Royal License. By his most humble servant Joseph Roux, Royal Hydrographer.
In Marseille, Joseph Roux, 1764; small oblong 8vo (17 x 24 cm). Engraved title page; 66 plates (numbered 1–65 + 66bis). The title page has been reattached to the last endpaper. Fawn sheepskin, smooth spine, gilt title, gilt coat of arms on the covers (19th-century binding).
The coat of arms corresponds to that of Claude Antoine Clériadus de Choiseul-Bompré, the second son of Charles Marie, Marquis de Choiseul-Bompré; he was guillotined in 1794 and had amassed a significant library and a cabinet of curiosities. (O.H.R. pl. 813). Ex-libris vignette on the upper inside front cover featuring the Choiseul coat of arms, framed by two “Wild Men.”
Allegorical title page designed and engraved by Laurent, showing signs of handling. This is the first part alone of this atlas, which normally contains 121 plates (plus the title page). It was produced by Joseph Roux the Younger, the king’s hydrographer in Marseille, who presents precise maps of a number of Mediterranean ports, complete with visual landmarks and instructions for entering them.
