Rudolf Hausner was an Austrian artist. After graduating from Gymnasium, Hausner studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Fahringer and Karl Sterrer. In 1937 he was called up to the army. In 1938, the Reich Chamber of Culture banned him from exhibiting his paintings. In 1941 he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht. It was during this time that he had his traumatic "blockhouse experience" in the Slovakian Tatra Mountains, which he would repeatedly revisit in his work: his introverted, technically masterful paintings examine the position of the individual in the modern world. In 1943, Hausner was discharged as unfit for war and employed as a technical draughtsman in the armaments industry. In the last days of the war in 1945, he was once again drafted into the anti-aircraft defence. He had little success as a painter in the 1950s. In 1952, Hausner was sentenced to two years in prison because he was involved in the Grill affair and in the fencing of stolen precious metals. He sold his first painting in 1960. As a graphic artist and painter, he became an important representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism. As the pianist of the Penguin Jazz Quartet, Hausner travelled throughout Europe and Egypt. In 1965, Hausner was appointed Professor of Fine Arts/Drawing at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, where he worked until 1980.Rudolf Hausner is the father of the painter and stage designer Xenia Hausner, the film director Jessica Hausner and the costume designer Tanja Hausner.
