RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT NICHOLAS WITH RIZA 19TH C. Here Nicholas is depicted in a typical waist up configuration rendered in a style echoing the 16th century. Nicholas delivers a blessing with his right hand and with his left hand holds a book of Gospels. Above his right shoulder is Christ in a roundel and above his left shoulder the Virgin presenting him with his Bishop's stole. The border is overlaid with a silver filigree riza interspersed with domed medallion decorative elements. The head of Nicholas is surrounded by a similarly rendered filigree silver gilt halo. The halo stamped 84, and the riza with indistinguishable faint hallmark and 84 standard. The back covered in blue velvet. 12.5 inches x 10.5 inches (31.5 x 27 cm).
