HISTORY: The silver Mounted Cut Glass Decanter is a typical example of the 22nd Moscow artel, which began its activity in the 1910s. At the beginning of the twentieth century, during the heyday of domestic silver production in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, there was a process of formation of artels of jewellers and silversmiths, which were a kind of unification of craftsmen. The artisans were collectively responsible for the quality of the products, shared income and took care of the employees. Artels began to form in the late 1900s, and by 1917 there were more than thirty of them in Moscow. As a rule, these associations specialized in certain types of products: some worked with silver and created products with filigree enamel in the 'original Russian style', others specialized in cult utensils, releasing precious vestments for images; jewelry artels produced jewelry from gold and precious stones. Some artels have been particularly successful in providing representative frames for crystal objects. These were the 4th, 31st, 14th and 22nd artels, an example of which is the decanter. The frames are made in a strict and restrained neoclassical style, which was especially popular at the beginning of the 20th century. It was quite often used in the design of frames for crystal products, since the very technique of combining faceted crystal with silver was borrowed at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries from the era of late classicism.
