RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH / CATHEDRAL VIEW LARGE ICON PAINTING, polychrome-painted surface on a thin canvas lining, glued onto wood board, central scene featuring a large cross held aloft by three men including possibly Saint John the Theologian, with a crowd of men to the right and at left of the scene a male and female pair of saints (likely Saint Constantine and Saint Helen); view of a large church and other buildings in the background including five gilt onion domes with crosses; hand-painted black Cyrillic writing above and throughout, additional Cyrillic script penciled verso. Probably Russian. 19th century. 18 1/2" x 21 1/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: This impressive and unusual view may have been created in celebration of the erection of a grand new church, or installation of a holy cross in that church.

From the estate of Elizabeth H. Campbell, Staunton, VA.
Condition Report: Very good condition with some scattered losses and flaking/bubbling mostly around edges; possible mildew damage in a couple minute areas. Board drilled verso with modern wall-hanging hooks.
