Rademaker Watercolor of Nijmegen

[ translate ]

Abraham Rademaker (1675-1735).
View Of Nijmegen, With Boatmen Loading Barges In The Foreground.
Gouache over black chalk, within black and gold framing lines.
Signed in gouache, lower right: A. Rademaker fecit.
Inscribed on rear "Arnheim on the Rhyne".
6 3/4" x 11 1/4" sheet, 16 x 20 1/4" framed.
Acquired from the Estate of Robert Reford, Esq., Montreal.
Although he made numerous topographical drawings, many of which were engraved, Rademaker's decorative gouaches usually depict imaginary views or capricci. Topographically accurate views such as this are rare in this medium. Other, monochrome drawings of Nijmegen are, however, known, and there are four views of the city in the compendium of 300 topographical prints after drawings by Rademaker, published in 1725 under the title Nederlantse Outheeden en Gesigten.
