Artist Biography:
Rafael Cánovas - Painter born in Barcelona in 1920. Son of the painter Ángel Cánovas Ruiz, he learned from a very young age in his workshops, alternating with classes on the history of Ángel López Obrero. Starting in 1951 he presented his work in various Barcelona galleries (Cristina, Layetanas, Época, etc.) such as Olot, El Vendrell and foreign cities such as Buenos Aires, Paris and Zurich. He also participated in certain artistic and painting competitions, receiving awards on several occasions. He specialized in themes of the mundane environment, cafe scenes, motifs of bulls and urban views, compositions of figures animated by a certain ironic, caricature-like air, of a laconic expressionism related both to Solana and to certain French artists such as Derain and Rouault.
