Railway Advertising: Two Printed Paper Fans, the double leaves mounted on basic wood sticks, both advertising the "Chemins de Fer de l'Etat", the designs after Geo Dorival. The first, with a pale green background, shows a rural coastal location opposite perhaps the white cliffs of Dover, and advertises excursions across the English Channel and to balmy resorts on and off the Atlantic coast, mentioning Normandy, Brittany and Jersey amongst others. The verso advertises diverse products from Badoit water, treatments for arthritis and rheumatism, to fashion and champagne. A central drawing of a waiter is signed "SEM". Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as Sem, was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. The second fan shows a coastal setting with a windmill to the left, the background in the colours of a setting sun, a large tree in vivid red making a dramatic statement on the leaf. After Geo Dorival once more. Marked on the recto for "Corneille et Serre Paris". The verso is marked "Francolin, Gilet * Cie, éventaillistes Paris" and advertises the "Eau de Melisses" which goes back for centuries and is believed to cure all manner of ailments. As well as trips to locations in Northern France, a Paris to London route is advertised. Guard lengths similar at 8.5 inches or 21.5cm (2)
