9 lithographs, most pre-war and mainly from Ravi Varma Press. It is not easy to date these prints correctly. These prints were printed in the time range 1920-1950. Light signs of age; in good condition! A print with some paper loss and tape on the back. a picture with a tear. See photos for the best impression. Most of the prints from Ravi Varma press have been hung, framed and destroyed by use. The term oleography refers to the oil-rich ink used on the litho stone.
Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) . He became famous for his paintings and world famous for his lithographic prints after his paintings. He used German printing technology and the help of German technicians for his printing work. He introduced affordable popular prints across India using the highest printing technology of that time.
Before him, images on paper did not exist in color and his posters were and are hung and adored throughout India. Only a few posters have stood the test of time and even fewer have been found that have never been hung. His oil paintings have been the source of inspiration for his lithographers to produce lithographs of which these prints are an example.
