Ralph Idris Steadman (British, b. 1936) Untitled
Ralph Idris Steadman (British, b. 1936) Untitled, 1993 Mixed media on paper 23-1x4 x 33 inches (59.1 x 83.8 cm) (sheet) Signed and dated lower center: Ralph Steadman 93 Ralph Steadman is a British illustrator celebrated for his explosive ink splatters, jagged lines, and biting satire as seen in the present work. Steadman is best known for his long collaboration with writer Hunter S. Thompson, most notably on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which helped define the visual language of Gonzo journalism. The artist's distinctive work spans political caricature, literary illustration, and social commentary combined with anarchic humor. In this emblematic example, Steadman satirically depicts burling, a professional sport of log rolling, where lumberjacks compete in specialize cleats to out roll one another. Log rolling river drives have been outlawed in the commercial lumber industries since the 1970s, but that does not prevent lumberjacks from risking life and limb for the sport.
