Biography of Ramon Borrell Pla (Barcelona, 1876 - 1963)

Painter, draftsman, watercolorist and engraver, Ramón Borrell was the son of the painter Pere Borrell of the case. With his father he learned the first rudiments of the trade, which he later perfected at the Llotja school in Barcelona.

A regular at Barcelona exhibitions, he appeared at those in 1894, 1896 and 1902. At that time he had already established himself as a painter and specialized in the representation of horses, which in his work receive a dynamic and majestic treatment. Any pose, posture, is good to represent like no one else, Borrell knows how to do it, all the beauty and majesty of these animals.
The fame achieved with these works allowed him to hold several individual exhibitions in Barcelona and other cities, while at the same time directing the academy founded by his father, after he was immobilized by an attack of paralysis. In this center he had the opportunity to teach art, without moving away from another of his great passions: mural painting. With this technique he precisely decorated the chapel of Sant Joan Bosco of the Salesians of Sarria, the chapel of the Marquises of Casa Pinzón and the side walls of the chapel of the Holy Spirit in the church of San Justo y Pastor.
Fruit of his activity as an engraver, very extensive and of great perfection, the numerous ex-libris made in etching stand out. The interest of these works is exceptional, both for their category and for the constitution of a valuable graphic witness. As an engraver he participated in "the drawing and engraving exhibition" held in Barcelona (1938) where he was awarded. Aside from the ex-libris, it is evident from all his etching works that Borrell mastered both the art of engraving and its technique.
His works are highly appreciated throughout the world and he is represented in the most important museums.
