Raoul Dufy Signed "Famous American Artist" Series Commemorative Stamp Block

A commemorative stamp block of fifteen U.S. postage stamps signed by French Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) as "Raoul Dufy" in the lower right corner of the block. N.d., but based on the September 5, 1940 issue date of these stamps, circa 1940. The stamp block, serial number 22587, is mounted to a piece of cream paper and a cardboard mount measuring 5.25" x 4.625" overall. A few closed tears along the stamp perforation lines, and a stray ink stroke at top. Minor mounting traces verso, else near fine. Dufy's signature is bold and dark. Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

This bright blue green 1-cent Gilbert Stuart stamp was issued as part of the "Famous Americans Series--Artists."

Raoul Dufy, along with younger brother Jean Dufy, belonged to the Fauvist artistic movement of early-twentieth-century France. Raoul was a painter, print maker, illustrator, and muralist, and he also designed furniture, textiles, stationery, and stage scenery. Dufy's style is characterized by its bold shapes, bright colors, and its exuberant primitive aesthetic.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
