Raquel Welch | Annotated "Myra Breckinridge" Script
An original script for Myra Breckinridge (Twentieth Century Fox, 1970) that has been annotated throughout in pencil and ink by Raquel Welch. The 146-page script is contained within a light blue paper cover, which is stamped with the words "MYRA BRECKINRIDGE / SEPTEMBER 17, 1969 / CONFIDENTIAL - NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM 20TH CENTURY-FOX FILM CORP. LOT." The upper left is stamped with the number "199" and the upper right is stamped with the word "FINAL."
Throughout the entire script Welch crossed out lines of dialogue and sometimes entire scenes with pencil. In the margins, she wrote notes such as "Is she really as stupid as she seems" and "He seems such a strong & confident young man that I never dreamed he was sensitive."
Based on Gore Vidal's satirical best-selling novel, the film adaptation of Myra Breckinridge starred Raquel Welch as the title character, a transgender woman, and costarred Mae West, Farrah Fawcett, John Huston, and Rex Reed. Welch is said to have believed the challenging role would help her evolve as a serious actress following a series of films that focused primarily on her physical attributes. The making of the movie was incredibly troubled, with Welch and West reportedly feuding. Upon its release, Myra Breckinridge received negative reviews and disappointing box office returns but has since garnered a devoted fan base.
