An oil on arched linen painting, titled 'Madonna + Whore', signed and dated Edith Vonnegut 1980 (lower right). American artist Edith Vonnegut (b. 1949) is the daughter of writer Kurt Vonnegut. The present work takes inspiration from Old Master paintings depicting the Pieta and is in keeping with much of Edith Vonnegut's oeuvre. According to a statement on the artist's website "My aim is to rewrite the history of women as I think we have been portrayed incorrectly from Eve on. I'm here to herald the unheralded and bring majesty to the mundane."
