Rare 11th C. Seljuk Paper & Ink Kufic Manuscript Page

Near East/Central Asia, Persia, Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A wonderful and well preserved paper manuscript page from an Islamic text with calligraphy verses in black ink. The text is written in bold and elegant Kufic script, the preferred style for transcribing the Koran, and this page may be from this holy text. Both sides of the page are written with 5 lines that include faint red dots to indicate vocalization or diacritical marks. The translations for a few words include "dreaming" or "dreamer." Size: 5.375" L x 3.75" W (13.7 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private Washington, USA, collection, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Small piercings and creasing along the edge where page was stitched to spine or folio. Three small perforations in center of page. Old inventory numbers written in pencil on the upper and lower corners. Staining and discoloration around calligraphy.
