Rare 12th C. Indonesian Majapahit Red-Glazed Goat

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. I love this one! A rare red-glazed ceramic goat, approximately half-life-size, with a lifelike, powerful stance, thick legs, and a dramatically decorated head with a large spiral on its forehead. Curved horns flow from the top of the head to the back of the neck. During the later Majapahit Empire, the buildings of East Java - both religious and secular - were decorated with dramatic figural sculptures in stone and terracotta. Many of these sculptures display characters from the great Hindu epic Ramayana. This goat may represent Naigamesha (Harinegameshi), a goat-headed deity associated with the war god Kartikeya. Condition Report: One leg has been repaired and much of the body has been restored. Small losses from tail, one leg, ears, and beard. Penis is also lost. Overall very nice condition with excellent craquelure on the surface and nice preserved details, especially of the face/head.
