Rare Anatolian Polychrome Pottery Vessel
Ancient Near East, Anatolian, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A lovely and rare polychrome vessel from a culture much better known for its grey schist statues and stelae. The form presents a bulbous body with a rounded shoulder and ever so slightly rolled rim that sits stably on a flat base. The substantive shoulder is painted with a wide register of vertical striations interspersed with large "X" motifs housing netted patterns, and vertical bands of zigzag patterns, and topped by a horizontal zigzag band - all carefully delineated in red and black against a cream-hued ground.
