Rare Chavin Shell Trumpet w/ Incised Figures

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. An impressive seashell trumpet with several abstract anthropomorphic figures incised across its creamy white surface and double perforations at two opposite sides for suspension. There were no stringed instruments in South America prior to European contact, but they did have a multitude of wind and percussion instruments. These were played in large ceremonies, perhaps relating to warfare, in tandem with other instruments. A wonderful and extremely early Pre-Columbian musical instrument that creates a beautiful bellowing sound! Size: 8.75" L x 6.75" W (22.2 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#145325
Condition Report: Expected age wear with scuffs, nicks to peripheries, and pressure fissures to surface and some abrasions/minor losses to interior areas. Incised carvings are vivid and trumpet produces a rich bellowing sound.
