Rare Chinese White Jade Carved Pendant, Song

A rare Chinese jade carved pendant dating from the Song dynasty. The pendant features a figure holding a ruyi and riding a dragon.

Dimensions: 2 3/4 inches tall X 3 3/4 inches wide; 7 cm tall X 9.5 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: Overall good condition with some chipping.

Provenance: From Mr. Zaun's collection in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Zaun lived in Taiwan with his wife in 1967-68 and began his interest in Chinese history and artifacts there. This item was purchased from Chicago Art Galleries in Chicago, Illinois.

Reference: A similar white jade carving dating from the Yuan to Ming dynasty was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on November 30, 2011 as lot 3186. A similar black and white jade carving dating from the Song to Yuan dynasty was sold at Sotheby's New York on March 15, 2016 as lot 108, and two similar white jade plaques from the same period sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong on April 5, 2017 as lot 3307 and lot 3304 respectively. A similar white jade ornament dating from the late Tang to early Northern Song dynasty and with cloud and bird design can be found in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing. It is illustrated in Jade In The Collection Of the Palace Museum, Beijing: Palace Museum Press, 2013, pg. 80 (fig. 1). Two similar carved jade pendants dating from the Song dynasty can be found in the collection of the Palace Museum. They are illustrated in The Pictorial Handbook of Ancient Chinese Jades, Beijing: Cultural Relics Publishing House, 2007, pg. 312 (fig. 2) and pg. 307 (fig. 3).
