Rare Civil War Era Photo: African-American Man w/ Horse
In this albumen photo, which is a bit larger than a carte-de-visite (CDV), an older, bearded black man dressed in a worn topcoat and hat holds the reins of a beautiful dark horse named “Viva” (according to an inscription in the photo). We think he looks proud. The tonal quality of this photo is excellent, with the rough, whitewashed barnboard behind the subject a wonderful compliment to the subjects in the foreground. Overall fine condition. No backmark.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate, Antique Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV]
