Rare Early Black Walnut Great Chair

possibly Southern or Islands, 18th century, black walnut throughout by microanalysis, with scalloped crest and spindle back, blocked and turned legs with stretchers, 47-1/2 in.˜Note: The exact origin of this rare early armchair remains an enigma. While the crest rail has references to Pennsylvania, the two tiers of spindles in the back point elsewhere, with relatives in North Carolina, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and elsewhere.˜Provenance: Private New England Collection
Condition Report: seat likely old replacement, otherwise excellent condition, with typical minor wear and cracks consistent with wear and use, crack at back of one front leg, minor losses at turned feet, cracks and some infill at one arm support with probable break and repair at lower turning, some distress and minor repair at front stretcher attachmentsÿ
