Rare Egyptian Glass Eye Inlays w/ Art Loss Certificate

[ translate ]

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, ca. 1800 BCE. A remarkably rare pair of glass (not faience but glass) eye and brow inlays, comprised of white glass sclerae, obsidian glass irises, and elegantly curved cobalt blue glass upper and lower lids with extending cosmetic lines, paired with long cobalt blue brows that taper to points at their outer ends. Eye inlays like these were once set into a painted wooden mummy sarcophagus. This pair is in particularly superb condition save a few minute nicks, and the brows present marvelous rainbow iridescence! Size: each eye measures approximately 4" L (10.2 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

A similar pair of Egyptian glass eye and brow inlays, only dating a bit later to New Kingdom, sold at Christie's New York (Antiquities, 10 June 2010, Lot 31) for $22,500.

Accompanied by copy of Art Loss Register certification no. S00098622.

Provenance: private Connecticut, USA collection; ex-private UK collection, 1990s - Art Loss Register certificate no. S00098622

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
