Rare Greek Blackware Ring-Shaped Askos

[ translate ]

Greece, South Italic colonies, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A unique example of a Greek ceramic ringed askos with a circular base supported by a narrow foot and a small looped handle near its circular flaring spout. Glazed entirely in a deep black pigment that has now gained a lovely silvery iridescence, this vessel is adorned with repeated short grooves around its circumference, as well as two ridges of different heights on its handle. Typically used to store oil or other precious liquids, this is an unusual form for an askos, which are more commonly of a flattened, round shape. This askos is similar in style to those from the Eastern Mediterranean. A wonderfully curious Apulian object of daily use! Size: 5.25" Diameter x 3.25" H (13.3 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
