Rare Iberian Stone Male Figurative Effigy

[ translate ]

Western Europe, Spain, Iberian Peninsula, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. An intriguing figurative effigy of a rare form depicting a male standing atop fused legs with a vertical delineation cleft. The nude man presents with an erect posture via his straightened back, muscular arms held tightly against the exposed ribs, rounded pectoral muscles perhaps indicative of manual labor or of being a slave, and a tapered neck. The spherical head features recessed circular eyes, a slender triangular nose, a petite mouth, and smooth cheeks, all beneath a bald top. Figurative examples were not uncommon throughout ancient Iberia as many were placed within temples or sanctuaries. Nearly emaciated examples like this one, however, are rather unusual as they exhibit more meticulously delineated characteristics. A nebulous yet enticing effigy from ancient Western Europe! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 1.375" W x 4.125" H (3.5 cm x 10.5 cm).

Provenance: private Keller collection, Alabama, USA; ex-private Toro collection, Spain, acquired in the 1940s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
