Rare Inca Stone Canopa w/ Bird Head

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A charming vessel, hand-carved and meticulously-smoothed from a deep yellow stone with dark-orange inclusions, with a hollowed-out interior cavity and a thick tail on the verso. Known as "canopas," these small stone vessels are one of the most common ritual effigies known from the Inca Empire. Canopas typically depicts camelids like llamas or alpacas, however this rare example boasts a minimalist avian head with drilled eyes and a short conical beak protruding from the rounded head. Size: 1.3" W x 1.8" H (3.3 cm x 4.6 cm).
