Rare Islamic Glass Molar Flask - Cobalt Blue

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, Islamic, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A mesmerizing mold-blown glass molar bottle - named "molar" because its four legs resemble the roots of those grinding teeth found at the back of the mouth. Created from beautiful cobalt blue glass, the molar-shaped body is further adorned with bas-relief decorative patterns, and rises to a tubular neck with a concave channel around the midline, and finally a slightly flared rim. Such a vessel was created to store unguents, cosmetics like kohl, or precious aromatic perfumes. In addition to its fabulous form, liberal amounts of rainbow and silvery iridescence imbue the vessel with even more beauty. Size: 0.8" W x 4" H (2 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private DeCarlo collection, New Jersey, USA acquired before 1980

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
