Rare Japanese Meiji / Taisho Brass Vase - NIPPON

[ translate ]

East Asia, Japan, late Meiji to Taisho period, ca. 1891 to 1921 CE. An attractive and rare brass vessel displaying a wide base, corseted body, and flared rim, all sitting upon a discoid foot. The elegant vase boasts a lustrous exterior with a vibrant red-hued patina. The word "NIPPON" has been stamped on the base of the gorgeous vessel, indicating that it was created between 1891 and 1921. In response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren’t “plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labeled in legible English words”, Japanese vessels were stamped with the word "Nippon". This practice ended in 1921, however, when the word "Nippon" became considered a Japanese word. Size: 3.375" in diameter x 6" H (8.6 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Evergreen, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA, collection, acquired 1960 to 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
