Rare Letter from abbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, AB" D of Ponovizh.

Written During His Visit to the United States During the Great Depression

Rare, handwritten and signed letter from the Ponovizher Rav, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, written in 1930 during his fundraising trip to the United States in the midst of the Great Depression.

The letter was written on a special letterhead printed specially for his stay in the United States. In it, Rabbi Yosef Shalom writes: " To our great sorrow and because of the harsh times, the situation of the yeshiva is now very bad. I return home to find incredible debt – and what will be the fate of this great Torah center?"

Nevertheless Rabbi Yosef Shalom's trip was crowned with success despite the fact that it took place in the midst of the Great Depression, as he managed to fundraise $10,000 for the Yeshiva world.

Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman (1888 - 1969) was the renowned Rabbi of Ponovizh and founder of the great Ponovizh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak following the yeshiva's destruction in Lithuania. He studied under the great rabbis of Lithuania such as Rabbi Eliezer Gordon and Rabbi Shimon Shkop, in the Novardok Yeshiva and later by the Chofetz Chaim in Radin. Aside from his astounding proficiency in Torah, Rabbi Yosef Shalom was exceptionally charismatic and served as a member of the Lithuanian parliament on behalf of Agudas Yisrael.
