Rare Manteno Stone Standing Male, ex-Arte

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $1000**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno, ca. 1000 CE. An exceptional volcanic stone sculpture of a standing male figure on an integral rectangular plinth, presenting with a sizable head, a large trapezoidal headdress, a prominent round nose, a jutting chin, and two ears decorated with ornaments. A recessed area below his nose seemingly represents a smiling mouth. Hanging from his broad square shoulders, a beaded necklace falls onto his flat chest above an erect phallus and bulging rectangular legs. Both arms, rendered with swelling biceps, are fixed to his sides, parallel to his body. A rotund posterior sticks out from his otherwise flat backside. Truly a rare and remarkable example from Manteno culture! Size: 6.25" L x 5.25" W x 12.25" H (15.9 cm x 13.3 cm x 31.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired in September 2019; ex-Arte Primitivo auction, New York, New York, USA; ex-John A. Moir Trust of 2013

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. #159282
Condition Report: Expected surface wear/weathering with minor nicks/chips, and pitting. Though most pigmentation has faded or chipped, some nice remains can be found throughout. Otherwise, intact and excellent with light earthen deposits.
