Nathaniel Hawthorne
Washington, DC, [ca. 1862]

Rare Nathaniel Hawthorne Signed CDV by Brady
Signed photograph

A vignette portrait carte de visite of American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), captured during his second-known sitting at Mathew Brady's studio. Measures 2.25" x 3.875", Washington, D.C., n.d. [ca. 1862]. Boldly signed, "Nathl Hawthorne", along the bottom margin of image. This portrait, captured by noted photographer Alexander Gardner, was taken during the author's March 1862 trip to Washington whereupon he met with President Lincoln. Light soiling and handling marks throughout. Closely trimmed at edges, affecting a few letters of the studio's imprint. Else, near fine.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Hawthorne wanted to examine its effects on the country firsthand. He was thus commissioned by The Atlantic Monthly to write an essay on the topic, which would appear in the magazine's July 1862 issue. During his trip to Washington that March, he notably met with General George McClellan and later, with Abraham Lincoln at the White House. The latter meeting also included cabinet members Edwin Stanton and Salmon Chase, during which time Hawthorne's group presented the president with an ivory-handled whip. His subsequent essay, titled "Chiefly About War Matters", was received with controversy for its antiwar, "pro-Southern" sentiments, in addition to its unflattering descriptions of Lincoln as an unkempt leader.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
